Crime
Scene: Grandma’s House. Suspects: Little Girl In A Red Hood. A Wolf. A
Woodsman. And Grandma. All of them look suspicious and it’s not certain
exactly what is going on. But goodies have been disappearing all over
the forest and someone has to ferret out the greedy mastermind behind
it all. “Hoodwinked” is a fractured fairy tale of the best kind, taking
something old and turning it incredibly new again.

“Deuce
Bigalow: Male Gigolo” is perhaps the most well known of Rob Schneider’s
work. It is also another DVD that is being recycled by the lovely
people at Disney. The film originally came out in 1999 and we can only
assume that this “Little Black Book Edition” was initiated because of
the recent release of the sequel, “Deuce Bigalow: European Gigolo.” Let
me point out that the sequel bombed and that it was directed by Mike
Bigelow, who most people in the industry know doesn’t exist. In other
words, they made the name up because the movie was so bad the real
director didn’t want the credit. But let’s talk about the first film in
this growing franchise.

“The
Shaggy Dog” was Disney’s first-ever live-action movie, and it’s a
winner, too. It stars the loveable Fred MacMurray, who plays much the
same fatherly role he popularized with the TV show “My Three Sons.”
This admittedly shaggy dog story is about a teen forced to view the
world from “inside” a dog, rather than the more typical tale of a boy
“and” his dog.

This four-movie collection of Richard Pryor films leaves a lot to be
desired both in terms of overall DVD quality and transfer quality.
There are absolutely no special features whatsoever here and the
collection is rather an odd grouping, with only “Brewster’s Millions”
being a film of much note.

“Daltry
Calhoun” is a quirky, relentlessly boring film that came out in
November of last year, though no one seemed to notice. The film follows
ne’er-do-well Southerner Daltry Calhoun (Johnny Knoxville) who is run
off by his girlfriend’s mother in rural Tennessee and swears to make
amends for his boorish ways. After 14 years, Daltry has become the
proud owner of a turf and sod business that specializes in supplying
grass to golf courses. Though beloved in his adopted Ducktown, U.S.A.,
Daltry runs into trouble when his former girlfriend Mae (Elizabeth
Banks) returns with their 14-year-old daughter June (Sophie Traub).
