Steve Martin has a knack for finding projects that touch the hearts of
moviegoers, as well as spreading the appeal from adults to kids, which
Hollywood has again begun recognizing as the necessary audience to
capture of late. Martin delivers realistic yet zany performances that
fit comfortably in the framework of the characters he chooses to play.
In “Cheaper By The Dozen,” Martin is expertly aided and abetted by
Bonnie Hunt, a seasoned hand at capturing the same family market, and
by up and coming new teen television heartthrobs, Tom Welling, Piper
Perabo and Hilary Duff.

“The Cat In The Hat” has one of the best menus that will be seen this
year. From the very opening, we get the impression that we have stepped
into one of Dr. Seuss’ books about the abstract and the strange,
complete with widgets and gizmos that prompt and challenge the viewers
to do different things. Viewers, especially young ones, are strongly
advised to sit through the whole menu until it repeats. The two kids in
the movie are a hoot to watch, whether in the film, the menu, or the
outtakes. Maneuvering through the menu triggers further funny responses
on the disc.

Sure, a handful of great movies are released every year and one takes
the Academy Award for Best Picture, but for every classic film that
hits theaters there are hundreds, if not thousands that go straight to
video or even worse, never to be seen by anyone. Watching a bad B-movie
can be good fun, especially if it’s with a handful of friends who are
aspiring comedy writers. The writers and creators of Mystery Science
Theater 3000 have found a very clever way to turn some of the worst
films ever made into some of the funniest comedy you’ve ever seen.

Alex Rose (Ben Stiller) and his wife Nancy Kendricks (Drew Barrymore)
are upwardly-mobile yuppies, dedicated to the New York way of life.
They’re married and tired of cramped, unpleasant apartments. They’re
searching for just the right place where writer Alex can have his
in-home office and abandon his practice of writing at Starbucks “with
the other novelists.” Nancy works for a fussy magazine editor (Wallace
Shawn), and is the main source of income.
