When the "Batman" animated cartoon series began -- well, the latest
about the original Batman, anyway -- it was greeted with cheers from
Batmaniacs the world over. THIS is the way Batman SHOULD be done! they
thundered, few having been satisfied with the two Tim Burton movies.
(They didn't yet know what horrors awaited, once Joel Schumacher took
over direction.)
BATMAN: MASK OF THE PHANTASM is a feature cartoon from the TV-cartoon
team; in fact, it was originally intended to be a straight-to-video
release, but in the middle of a gap between live-action Batman movies,
Warner Bros. decided to release it theatrically. And again, though it
died at the boxoffice, those same Batmaniacs greeted the ...

‘Batman Beyond: The Movie’ is a surprisingly class act in every way but
one. While it’s aimed at teens and youngsters, it has an intelligent
script, moderately dimensional characters, a distinguished vocal cast
and a sound mix with music and effects that is better than a lot of the
live action out there. Furthermore, this DVD provides a lot of bang for
your buck, with not only the title item but four TV episodes - ‘Gotham
Golem,’ ‘Winning Edge,’ ‘Dead Man’s Hand’ and ‘Meltdown’ - included in
the package. Adding courtesy to generosity, each of the episodes is
broken into eight chapters (the movie has eighteen chapters), making
for some of the easiest scene access ever on a DVD release of episodic
television.
What, then, is the ...

If you are of a certain age and temperament, chances are Disney’s 1967
animated version of ‘The Jungle Book’ made an indelible impression. It
doesn’t matter if you haven’t seen the movie in decades. When Phil
Harris’ Baloo the Bear bursts into his paean to the ursine good life,
"The Bare Necessities," in Chapter 10, you automatically start singing
right along.

‘The Iron Giant’ is an unusual animated film in several respects. The
script by director Brad Bird and Tim McCanlies, based on Ted Hughes
book ‘The Iron Man,’ would be right at home in a live-action feature,
with a tone and sensibility somewhere between ‘E.T.’ and ‘Mighty Joe
Young.’ The dialogue is consistently, startlingly witty and the
character animation is fluid and lively. However, while the movie was
clearly made with "the whole family" (and all that the phrase implies)
in mind, the finale and a few earlier events may be a wee bit dark for
the very young.

Historically, the combination of animation and religion has not been
thought of as either sophisticated or engaging. The mixture has
generally resulted in pieces that are stiff in scripting, acting and
artwork, usually to be banished to some barbaric hour of the morning on
a local station.
