According to Hollywood rumor, 'Dinosaur' is the most expensive movie
ever made; figures cited range from $200,000,000 to $375,000,000. It
was in development at Disney, active and not so active, from 1988 to
2000, but more importantly, Disney wanted to set up their own
computer-graphics animation studio. They are in partnership with Pixar
on the 'Toy Story' movies and 'A Bug's Life', -- but the profits on
those movies are split 50-50 with Pixar. Hence, 'Dinosaur', the first
full-length CGI film made by the Disney feature animation division. And
evidently the last; another CGI film in development was cancelled when
'Dinosaur' performed below expectations. Supposedly the Disney CGI
division has been closed down.

Some theatrical movies play better on home video, or perhaps they’re
just more enjoyable the second time around. In the theatre, the
animated musical "The Road to El Dorado" was agreeable, but it felt
like a live-action script that had been incompletely reconceived for
another format. Live, "Road" would have been an amiable, slightly
obvious, effects-heavy piece. As animation, it seemed paradoxically
daring and tame, tweaking the rules that govern what can and can’t be
done in "family" fare without going as far as it might.

Yes, 'Chicken Run' is 'The Great Escape' with chickens. It's made by
the brilliant team of Nick Park and Peter Lord; Park directed the
Oscar-winning 'Creature Comforts' and the Wallace and Gromit shorts,
one of which also won an Oscar. It's not as hilarious as those
masterpieces of stop-motion comedy, but as a feature film, it has to be
made in a different manner.

Who hasn't seen 'Fantasia'? The number of those over the age of 10 who
have yet to see this animated classic must be nearing the vanishing
point. Not only has it been reissued time and again, but the Disney
company has sent it forth on video over and over -- though never in the
form it is on this new DVD release. It's available as a stand-alone
disc, or in a special 3-disc package that includes 'Fantasia 2000' and
a galaxy of extra material. We're reviewing the stand-alone disc here.

One of the many dismaying things about 'Titan A.E.' is that not only is
it just slightly better than 'Heavy Metal 2000,' it has almost the same
story. This big-scale animated movie was supposed to take the boxoffice
by storm as 'Star Wars' had years before -- but it was a bust, a bomb,
a fizzle of such catastrophic proportions that it killed the 20th
Century-Fox animation division.
