It's not so much that it's a genuine classic as that it's an ultimate guy movie -- there are only two actors, and they're two of the most macho actors in cinema history: Toshiro Mifune and Lee Marvin. John Boorman directed from a screenplay by Alexander Jacobs and Eric Bercovici.

It’s difficult enough to get films made that actually are morally ambiguous and thought-provoking. It’s got to be even tougher to make something like this, where it gradually becomes clear that the message the filmmakers have in mind is not the one that’s coming across.

It was later adapted as a memorable EC Comics horror story by Jack Davis, and filmed as a half-hour episode of a syndicated TV series. Bradbury also expanded the short story into a screenplay -- evidently for Gene Kelly -- that was never filmed. So he turned the screenplay into one of his most popular novels, Something Wicked This Way Comes. And then Bradbury adapted that into this movie, made by the Disney studio (when it was in transition), directed by Jack Clayton (THE INNOCENTS) and produced by Peter Vincent Douglas.

No matter what he’s called, he remains an exceptionally tough, determined and violent customer.

Elliott Gould in this movie, for example, instead of Dean Jones. He wanted the movies to have more edge, more adult appeal, and to a slight degree, he succeeded, but mostly he failed. THE LAST FLIGHT OF NOAH'S ARK is more watchable than most Disney movies released during Miller's reign, but it's not as lively and ingratiating as the (even) more kid-oriented movies that preceded it, and certainly not as adult as the movies the studio made when Michael Eisner and Jeffrey Katzenberg took over some years ...
