When "Charlie’s Angels" was released theatrically last year, there
seemed little cause for positive expectations. After all, the ‘70s TV
series it’s based on wasn’t very good and there have been some
downright ghastly bigscreen adaptations of decades-old television shows
(anybody remember 1999’s "The Mod Squad"?). Well, surprise – the
"Charlie’s Angels" movie turns in to be delightfully in on its own
joke. It’s a lot of absurd good fun, with gorgeous women and lots of
action of both the pyrotechnic and martial arts varieties.

'The Crow: City of Angels' is a follow-up (calling it a sequel implies
a continuity that barely exists) to the 1994 action/fantasy-thriller
'The Crow.' The original film, whatever its merits and drawbacks, is
still known principally for the tragic on-set accident that caused the
death of star Brandon Lee.
The new movie lacks its predecessor's bad karma, but it also is missing
most of the earlier 'Crow''s sense of purpose. Indeed, 'The Crow: City
of Angels' is a lot easier to appreciate if it's viewed as a long music
video with a narrative thread than an actual movie with a fleshed-out
plot.

The Crow is a modern, gothic tale of a man who comes back from the dead
to avenge his and fiancé's brutal murder. Somehow, he is brought to
life by the spirit of a crow that follows him around.
Once back from the dead, The Crow goes around after his killers one by
one, killing them as gruesomely as he can imagine. Of course, they
don't go down without a fight and they beat the hell out of him. In
fact, our hero is stabbed through the chest with a sword, cut up by
knives and shot approximately a million times, but since he is already
dead, he can't be stopped. In the end, the bad guys all die and he goes
back to the grave with his beloved.

'The Rock' was one of the best thrillers of 1996, surpassing 'Mission:
Impossible.' But Michael Bay's next film, 'Armageddon,' was so
awesomely awful that it's easy to forget how entertaining -- if
improbable -- 'The Rock' is. It's usually remembered for the
spectacular, but over the top, San Francisco car chase that comes early
in the proceedings. This terrific DVD set from Criterion will remind
everyone what a fun time can be had on 'The Rock.'

I have a confession to make: I enjoyed the theatrical version of
"Highlander: Endgame." Yes, the fourth "Highlander" feature film is a
bit messy and there are places where its budgetary and time limitations
are all too apparent, but it has a surprising amount of heart to go
with a number of extremely varied, vigorous action sequences.
