While not a hit, this movie pleased virtually everyone who saw it in
theaters, and it's only going to win more followers on video --
particularly in this terrific DVD. There are plenty of extras, which is
easy enough to do, if you have the footage, but here they're
particularly well organized, with interesting deleted scenes,
intelligent commentary by director Steven Soderbergh and writer Scott
Frank, and well-chosen clips from the "electronic press kit" created to
publicize the film, including some words from Elmore Leonard, author of
the original novel.

For
long-time moviegoers, it’s still a bit surprising to see a major film
like the 2005 “King Kong” turning up on video so soon after its
theatrical release. For long-time video buffs, this well-produced
2-disc set will be welcome and disappointing in about equal amounts.

“Doom”
is based on the video game of the same name that debuted in the early
1990s. Not the first video game to be adapted for the screen and surely
not the last, “Doom” might be the worst adaptation yet. Set 200 years
into the future, though you wouldn’t know it by the goofy-looking
helicopter, something has gone horribly wrong at the Olduvai base on
Mars. Apparently there are a bunch of dead scientists and someone has
to investigate. Who better than a bunch of hokey big guys playing
Marines, none of whom seem to be anything like actual military? We meet
Sarge (The Rock), John “Reaper” Grimm (Karl Urban) and your regular,
highly stereotypical group of big, beefy guys.

Zorro
is an iconic hero, one of those born into the mythology of today’s
generation, encompassing those ideals that stand for what many people
idealize. Where Superman stands for truth, justice and the American
way, where Batman stands against the darkness of the urban world, where
Tarzan exhibits the noble savage, Zorro strikes against the iron hand
of oppression. In “The Legend of Zorro,” Alejandro de la Vega (Antonio
Banderas) champions the statehood of California and takes up sword and
whip against those who would destroy the United States.

Frank Martin (Jason Statham), the enigmatic driver with the Special
Forces background who specializes in pickups and deliveries, first hit
the screen (several times, and kicked it too!) in “The Transporter.”
French director Luc Besson has carved a niche out of the action movie
market for himself (“La Femme Nikita,” “Taxi,” “The Professional,” “The
Fifth Element”). He co-wrote and produced 2002’s “The Transporter” and
returns to handle part of the writing chores on this movie.
