An uneven and ultimately disappointing conclusion to what began in
“Kill Bill Volume 1,” “Volume 2” does have its brilliant moments and is
worth the trouble if you’ve already seen “Volume 1.” As a quick recap,
the film stars Uma Thurman as the Bride, a reformed member of an
assassin squad led by Bill (David Carradine). After leaving the Bride
for dead at her own wedding, the Deadly Viper Assassination Squad
scatter to do their own things until the fully recovered and retrained
Bride comes after them.

Coming off his success as Aragorn in the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy,
Viggo Mortensen tackles his first major solo studio outing with the
fact-based “Hidalgo” from director Joe Johnston. Based on the stories
of famed 19th-century endurance horse racer Frank T. Hopkins (there is
some question as to the truth of the tales), the film is a rousing if
not completely effective family adventure.

1987’s “Robocop” has become such an influential science-fiction film –
the word “robocop” has even entered common slang to denote a type of
police officer on violent autopilot – that it’s hard to remember that
once upon a time, the movie sounded like it might be a bad idea. Even
recalling “Robocop’s” success, it’s possible to hazily remember it as
emblematic of its time.

If you’ve seen even the poster art for ‘The Perfect Storm,’ you have
some idea of where this movie is heading. The shot of a fishing boat
being stood vertically on end by a 100-foot-wave is even more dramatic
in action – if you just can’t wait to see it, the actual shot is in
Chapter 34 – than it is as a still life. The filmmakers’ recreation of
what was dubbed "the storm of the century" when it occurred in reality
is quite literally awe-inspiring, while providing a service. Most
viewers of the film will come away feeling that they now know what it’s
like to be out in the worst weather imaginable and therefore don’t have
to endanger themselves by searching out ...

TWISTER is the only theatrical feature so far to center on tornadoes
and their terrifying, destructive power, although of course they do
turn up as punctuation in other movies, notably THE WIZARD OF OZ (which
gets referenced here). The two main reasons for the lack of major
tornado movies are that the special effects are difficult, and that a
story centering on tornadoes isn't exactly obvious.
