It’s the early part of the 1900s. Rich and powerful oil baron, Joe Grant (Ralph Bellamy), has several reputable soldiers of fortune tracked down and hires them to locate and rescue his wife, Maria (Claudia Cardinale) who has been kidnapped by Mexican revolutionary, Jesus Raza (Jack Palance). Raza is demanding a $100K reward, which Grant is willing to pay, but he’s concerned that the ruthless Raza might take the money and kill Maria anyway. Rico (Lee Marvin) rode with Raza many years ago, before he became disillusioned with the revolution and is surprised that Raza would stoop to kidnapping to fund his cause. Rico requests that his friend Bill Dolworth (Burt Lancaster) join the group, as he too rode with Raza, and he’s a skilled explosives expert.
