“The Darkest Hour” is a clear example of a film that could have been better than it turned out to be. In short, it had potential that was squandered.
The film turns out to be nothing more than an alien invasion film that never really leads anywhere substantial. Two business school friends show up in Moscow to make a pitch. When things turn ugly, they hit a local nightclub, where apparently they were notified by some app that two American girls were stuck there.
It doesn’t take long for the alien invasion to start. We never get to see what happens to rest of the world, but given what happens to Moscow we can safely assume that there are probably no more than a 1,000 human beings on the planet after just a few days of alien attacks.
The aliens are quite cool. ...

I predicted how this film would fair way before it ever saw the light of day. When a student of mine used it as a trailer for the final project of the semester, it was easy to see how the production would turn out. First, it would garner lots of attention. The concept of cowboys and aliens in the same film would intrigue the simple masses while it is in production. Of course the trailer with all the good bits in it helps the cause.
However, I saw straight through that and knew this film would approach tankness. Approaching the theatrical debut I was bombarded with interviews of just how great this concept was. However, I never heard that it was a great film. Bad sign. In the end, the film failed despite all the hype it received, and perhaps the ...

I am willing to bet that like myself, the majority you were not expecting what you were delivered when you first watched this film. The trailers seem to promise something so different than the end result. As such, "Sucker Punch" is probably one of the worst films of the year, but at the same time retaining so much potential.
Zack Snyder, famed for his directions of "300" and "Watchmen," fans were expecting a whole lot more the seasoned director. Instead, what we get is a titillating, fanboy wet dream surround by some of the most non-cohesive and under-developed plot ideas and characters. Snyder presents us with two different films, minimum, at the same time.
First, we have Baby Doll (Emily Browning), who has been committed to a shady psychiatric institution after a disaster with her stepfather and little sister. This became my ...

"Oh my, grandmother what big teeth you have." "Red Riding Hood" is extremely loosely based on the classic tale of little red riding hood. And when I say extremely loosely based, that is an understatement. Take away the red cloak and the grandmother and all we have is a "Twilight" spin-off about a village being attacked by a werewolf.
This isn't surprising given that the film is directed by "Twilight" director Catherine Hardwicke. "Red Riding Hood" fails so miserably it is hard to see how it was ever released. The story was an easy pitch to the studio I'm sure. But, where this film fails is its story, the writing, the casting, the acting and everything in between.
If there is any saving grace to the film it would have to be Amanda Seyfried. She is one of the more talented young ...

"I Am Number Four" is D.J. Caruso's latest sci-fi/action/suspense/thriller. With Caruso's career his products have been hit or miss. "Disturbia" was a pleasant surprise. Though the plot was fairly predictable, especially given that it was based on Hitchcock's "Rear Window." Then "Taking Lives" fell flat. "Eagle Eye" was more of a mixed bag, remarked as brilliant by some and horrible by others.
"I Am Number Four" lands more in league with "Eagle Eye." Teenagers will likely find the film to be exciting. However, the film does fall prey to incredibly slow first and second acts. Every time it seems as if the action is going to break out on screen the reigns are pulled in and the scene falls flat on its face. This continues until the climatic battle in the final 20 minutes or so, when it appears that producer ...
