African Cats (2011) Warning to all have children that may watch this film.  This is not the family-friendly documentary from Disneynature that the trailers led us to believe.  This is a tearjerker, full of pain, sorrow, suffering and loss.  And of course any other heart-wrenching synonym you can think of.  I have heard scores of stories about children begging their parents to leave in the middle of the film, or just simply walking out.  This documentary is not for the timid. Disneynature’s first release was “Earth,” and it showed us the beauty of the planet with some environmental issues.  “Oceans” took the same formula and applied it to the vast waters of the planet.  But, in the second film the tone took on a little bit of a darker theme.  However, in the third installment, “African Cats,” the tone is fierce and depressing.  Sure ...

Beauty And The Beast (Diamond Edition) (3D/2D) (1991) Okay, if you thought “The Lion King” in 3D was marvelous, then you haven’t seen anything yet.  Day and date with “The Lion King” in 3D, also comes “Beauty And The Beast” in 3D.  You haven’t experienced “Beauty And The Beast” if you haven’t watched this 3D disc.  It is truly spectacular. I’m lover of Disney animation, so to experience on the 3D plane is quite a sight.  The film is a masterpiece in its own right.  The music from Alan Menken and Howard Ashman is legendary, rivaling that of “The Little Mermaid” and “The Lion King.”  However, books have been written on the film itself, so I will concentrate on the 3D experience.  For a review of the film released previously on Blu-ray visit by clicking here. This Blu-ray package is essentially a re-release of the previous Diamond Edition of “Beauty ...

Fast Five (Extended Edition) (2011) After the first couple of “Fast And The Furious” it seems shocking that the studio and filmmakers continued to greenlight more sequels.  The franchise no doubt dwindled after the second and third films.  However, the key to resurrecting the franchise laid in bringing back the original actors for the fourth film. As the name suggests, “Fast Five” is the fifth in the series, and some would regard it as the best in the series.  Personally, the fifth and first films rank close together.  The franchise has not had the biggest impact on me.  Parts of each of the films are catchy, but they are far from great films, relying on the fancy cars to get them from beginning to end. However, by bringing back the original cast members, the filmmakers are able to continue on the original story and backgrounds.  This is ...

Lion King, The (Diamond Edition) (3D/2D) (1994) “The Lion King” is the pinnacle of Disney animation in the 1990s.  The 90s began with “Beauty And The Beast” and “Aladdin.”  The later 90s proved decent with works such as “Pocahontas,” “Mulan” and “Hercules,” the latter being one of my favorites.  But, it was “The Lion King” that really stuck with audiences. The music from Tim Rice, Elton John and Hans Zimmer is legendary.  It won Academy Awards.  Even after all these years, even with new generations, you will be hard pressed to find someone who doesn’t know the tune to “Hakuna Matata” or “I Just Can’t Wait To Be King.” The film has all the necessities of a great family Disney animation.  The story is unique and the images are unsurpassed.  The film really transports you to the African pridelands, well maybe not as much as “African Cats” does.  Nevertheless, ...

Count Of Monte Cristo, The (2002) “The Count Of Monte Cristo” is a motion picture re-telling of the classic novel by Alexandre Dumas.  While feelings on the outcome of the film range from so-so to enthusiastic, it is one of Kevin Reynolds better films. Kevin Reynolds has not had a very distinguishing career.  He has been sort of typecasted as a director due to the flop of “Waterworld.”  For me, Reynolds shining moment is “Robin Hood: Prince Of Thieves.”  Coming in a close second to that film is “The Count Of Monte Cristo.” The film is the story of Dantes (Jim Caviezel), a french sailor, wrongfully accused of treason.  An elaborate plot led to his accusation, and even more elaborate plot awaits those that betrayed him.  After his escape from prison, he vows to exact revenge on those that stole his life.  Among these people are his ex-best ...
