Jurassic Park (Ultimate Trilogy) (1993/1997/2001) It is hard to imagine what the film experience would be like today without the creation of “Jurassic Park.”  It was instrumental in the development of digital visual effects.  And still, done in 1993 contains better CGI work than many of the modern films.  Spielberg has been just as influential in the filming process as digital effects.  His creation truly made us believe that dinosaurs roamed the earth. There is a plethora of information out there on the Jurassic Park trilogy and so great time on the subject will not be spent here. For comparison, reviews of the DVD releases of the three films can be found at the following links. Jurassic Park The Lost World: Jurassic Park Jurassic Park III The original Jurassic park film is by far the most popular and most original of the trilogy.  The story is developed in a better fashion ...

Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (3D/2D) (2011) I couldn’t believe it when I heard that a fourth Pirates Of The Caribbean film was in production.  I thought to myself, what are they thinking?  How is that going to work?  Could it actually be any good?  It seems that you should always go with your gut instincts.  This is the perfect example of what not to do with a perfectly fine trilogy. The filmmakers have capitalized badly on a good name.  “Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” is an effort to try an copy all the successful moments of the original films into one.  This results in a slow moving, horribly written story film.  I sat through this thing trying to figure out what the purpose of everything was.  What is the ultimate end goal here? So, the just of what I can figure, we have Jack Sparrow (I ...

Chuck - The Complete Fourth Season (2011) “Chuck” is one those guilty pleasure indulgences for me.  It is not the strongest show, but something about it just draws me back week after week.  It may have something to do with the stunningly beautiful Yvonne Strahovski.  But I like to think there is more than just that. The first three seasons were a bit of a roller coaster.  It started off strong and then got to the point where it was thought petitions would be needed to keep the show going.  Thankfully, Warner has saw fit to give the show a chance. In the fourth season, we find lots of changes occurring throughout the season.  The common thread in this show is the search for Chuck’s family secrets.  His sister Ellie (Sarah Lancaster) has a family of her own.  With the death of Chuck’s father in a previous season, the ...

Horrible Bosses (Totally Inappropriate Edition) (2011) As seems to be all too true with comedies, “Horrible Bosses” is destined to be a “love it or hate it” film.  I for one fall in the hate it category.  I love comedies just as much as the next person, but this isn’t comedy done right to me. There is one law of comedies for me.  Do not allow me to think of what would really happen in the characters’ situations.  This comedy has failed in that regard more than any other film I have seen in recent memory.  Yes, I get that this is a film and it is a no-nonsense comedy, but that doesn’t excuse the behavior.  When a film basis comedy on things that actually happen, it becomes too much a basis for a drama trying desperately to be a comedy. In “Horrible Bosses,” the three main characters ...

Green Lantern (Extended Edition) (3D/2D) (2011) Growing up, “Green Lantern” was not one of my comic book staples.  I was familiar with the story but really only through the cartoon.  Still, I was pleased to learn of the creation of an action-packed, motion picture.  Those hopes were dashed along with everyone else’s once the picture was actually released. Don’t get me wrong.  I think there are some nice moments in this film, but it ultimately fails to deliver action for action-junkies, and it fails to capture the essence of the Green Lantern saga for comic book fans.  This really isn’t surprising given the turnout rate of these blockbuster comic book adaptations.  Still, I think we can all agree that we want some substance. “Green Lantern” is plagued with mediocre and at many times over the top performances, weak scripting, often times cheesy CGI, and just overall bad representation ...
