Brave (3D/2D Combo) (2012) “Brave” is the latest in the line of Pixar films.  It is hard to keep up with which is exactly Disney and which is Pixar given they share the same creative director.  However, this film is certainly Pixar.  Now, I write that not indicating its awe-inspiring power (or what happens to be the lack thereof) but because of the general feel the film conveys.  It is strong but at the same time fails without a doubt to live up to the Pixar name.  It was inevitable that Pixar would turn out a film that was not beloved by all.  This is it.  The film that divides the age groups.   “Brave” will no doubt keep your kids glued to the screen, particularly with the Blu-ray 3D release.  However, for the first time adults will find themselves drifting away from the attentiveness factor.  ...

Ghosts Of The Abyss (3D/2D) (2003) “Titanic” was and is the biggest blockbuster of all-time.  Its grossing numbers are staggering.  While the film takes a lot of flack for its runtime and the sappy love story, that is from the jealous viewers that wish they could have created such a project.  The film is legendary. About five years after the initial theatrical release of “Titanic” and about eight years after the initial dives to the wreckage of Titanic, James Cameron put together another crew to revisit the wreckage.  This was done in September of 2001.  IN fact the film makes note of the crews hearing of the news of 9/11 after emerging from the submersibles. Bill Paxton was invited by Cameron to join the crew.  Abernathy was also present on the dive.  Once again the Keldish traveled to the North Atlantic and visited the resting place of Titanic, ...

Once Upon A Time - The Complete First Season (2012) “Once Upon A Time,” well the first season at least, is perfect in my book.  I’m a sucker for the fairy tales.  The moment the promos for this show started airing I just couldn’t wait for it to begin.  Of course, having such high expectations usually always leads to a big letdown.  Not so in this case. “Once Upon A Time” is a class act.  The writing is superior to most episodic television programs, especially given the intricacies of the fantasy vs. modern worlds.  Questions that are raised are answered, or at least circled back to from time to time until the storyline comes back to the forefront.  IN addition to the writing, the show stars three of my favorite actresses, “Jennifer Morrison, Ginnifer Goodwin and Lana Parrilla.  Each does a terrific job with their parts. I won’t go into the premises ...

Adventures In Babysitting [25th Anniversary Edition] (1987) Before his famed “Harry Potter” days, Chris Columbus created one of those classic 80s films.  “Adventures IN Babysitting” is not a masterpiece by any means.  Until I received it I had forgotten the film even existed.  Upon another viewing, the film actually has a great throwback quality to the 80s.  It is always fun to watch stars of today in the breakout roles.  In this case, Elisabeth Shue. Video: 3.5/5 This film receives a better than to be expected video transfer.  As the last of five 8/7 releases by Touchstone to be watched, I didn’t have high hopes for it.  Following on the heels of video disasters such as “Grosse Pointe Blank” and “Preacher’s Wife,” “Adventures In Babysitting” comes through in fine style.  While the image suffers from mainly issues in league with “preacher’s Wife,” this transfer has just a slight edge ...

Preacher's Wife, The (1996) In tribute to Whitney Houston, Disney has released “The Preacher’s Wife.”  Also timely, considering the release of “Sparkle” in theaters, Whitney’s last film.  Sadly, “Preacher’s Wife” fails to live up to its age.  I remember a lot of buzz about this film when it came out a couple decades ago, but it hasn’t stood up to the test of time. Video: 3/5 The AVC presentation is correctly listed and viewed in 1.85:1.  However, that’s about where the enthusiasm stops.  The black levels lack depth leaving us with a relatively flat picture.  Shadows and objects occupy the same space, leaving a mess.  Also contributing to the flatness of the image is the softness of the image.  As usual, the close up shots are revealing in details.  However, mid range and establishing shots lack great definition.  Third on the list, is color saturation.  While ...
