SIRIUS Satellite Radio announced this week that Volkswagen will offer SIRIUS as a factory installed option on the new 2005 Volkswagen Jetta beginning this month, and that Mitsubishi Motors North America announced an exclusive agreement with SIRIUS to offer satellite radio as a factory-installed option in various Mitsubishi models.

XM Satellite Radio recently announced that it is expanding its basic service package, and that the monthly subscription price for XM's basic service will increase to $12.95 beginning April 2, 2005. XM is also offering existing customers the opportunity to lock in the current $9.99 monthly rate with a one-year prepaid plan and deeper discounts with a two, three, four, or five-year prepaid plan until April 2.

On the heels of Howard Stern signing a five-year deal with Sirius, Mel Karmazin, the former president of Viacom is set to step into the CEO position at Sirius. The announcement was made last week on the same day that Stern promoted Sirius in Manhattan.

Howard Stern, along with a group of strippers and thousands of cheering fans, began promoting his switch to satellite radio last week, even though his show on Sirius won’t begin until January 2006. The promotions took place at a Manhattan rally where he handed out free boom boxes and satellite subscriptions. 500 fans received free Sirius boom box sets, and another 20,000 at the rally received redeemable certificates for free radios.
