Comcast SportsNet announces that it will produce and air approximately 200 games in high-definition beginning January 2003 between its two networks in Philadelphia and Baltimore/Washington, D.C. Comcast SportsNet will produce such games from a network-owned, state-of-the-art mobile production unit that will service both networks. For the Philadelphia network, this includes select home games featuring the Philadelphia Phillies (MLB), Flyers (NHL) and 76ers (NBA). In Baltimore/Washington, DC, this will include select home games for the Baltimore Orioles (MLB), Washington Capitals (NHL) and Washington Wizards (NBA). As an added feature for home viewers, high definition television can be broadcast simultaneously with a traditional broadcast signal, therefore not impacting the image of those viewers without a high-definition television set. On the evening of Friday March 8, 2002, Depeche Mode fans will be tuning into the pay-per-view event "One Night In Paris, The Exciter Tour" on iN Demand (8:00 PM EST), TVN (9:00 PM EST), Echostar (9:00 PM EST) and DirecTV (9:00 PM EST). The exclusive two-hour event, replaying through April 9, was directed by the band's long-time friend Anton Corbijn at the sold-out Palais Omnisports de Paris Bercy in front of 16,000 fans as part of their 2001 worldwide tour.

Few argue that the killer app for HDTV is sports, and these winter Olympics mark the most significant offering of sports content since Monday Night Football in HD was abandoned last year. Enthusiasts have been praising HDNET and NBC’s coverage of the events despite occasional technical flaws like MPEG artifacts and some local audio dropouts like the ones heard on the Los Angeles NBC HDTV affiliate. Local AV retailers have reported a noticeable increase in sales of HDTV sets before the Olympics which clearly helps build the base of HDTV capable households ready to watch content at any given time.
