Consumer desire for large flat panel high definition television will fuel strong sales of plasma television in 2006, according to Jim Palumbo, President of the Plasma Display Coalition. During a presentation at the SID conference in San Francisco, Palumbo said sales of plasma TVs should reach the three million mark this year, dominating the large screen television category. In fact, according to DisplaySearch, plasma holds a 65 percent share of the 40 to 44-inch TV segment, and worldwide plasma TV shipments increased 87 percent year to year.

Home TV screens just keep getting bigger. And there's no end in sight. Panasonic pitched a tent outside the New York Stock Exchange yesterday to show off the biggest high-definition plasma screen yet. At 103 inches, it's an inch bigger than versions being produced by Samsung and LG. Panasonic vice president Andrew Nelkin says the new screen weighs 400 pounds. If you buy one, and have a wall big enough to fit it, you'll want professional installation. He also says he wouldn't be surprised to see someone come up with an even bigger screen before long.

Pioneer Electronics Inc. has announced the upcoming release of one of the world's first 50-inch 1080p plasma displays. With double the pixel density and resolution of 1080i and 720p displays, the Pioneer Elite PureVision PRO-FHD1 plasma with 1920 X 1080 resolution will be capable of displaying the entire range of HD broadcasts including 720p, 1080i and 1080p.
