Professor Edward Felten of Princeton’s Computer Science Department must be breathing a sigh of relief round about now. He and his team have been under considerable music industry pressure to refrain from revealing the results of their research last year in which they appear to have cracked the majority of the industry’s SDMI (Secure Digital Music Initiative) audio copy-protection and watermarking schemes, including, apparently, the Verance scheme that is already being put into use for DVD-Audio and SDMI Phase I products. Peter Buck, guitarist of the U.S. pop super group REM was arrested for allegedly causing quite a scene on a flight from Seattle to London this past weekend. He may have played guitar on the song "Shiny Happy People" but things weren’t so shiny today as he appeared in court. The changes that Buck faces are two counts of assault, being drunk on an aircraft, threatening behavior, disobeying an aircraft commander and criminal damage. The good news for Buck is that that the court is allowing him to complete the band’s promotional tour and he will go back to Uxbridge Magistrates Court on June 18, 2001. His bail was set at £30,000 (approx $43,000 US).

Joey Ramone, lead singer of the groundbreaking punk band, The Ramones, passed away Sunday, April 15th, 2001. Ramone was hospitalized in March of this year and was diagnosed with lymphoma. His death was confirmed by the Ramone's longtime artistic director, Arturo Vega. For 22 years, Ramone fronted the influential punk band The Ramones. Most music critics and modern day punk bands feel that the Ramones paved the way for bands from the Clash and the Sex Pistols to Green Day and The Offspring. Joe Strummer, lead singer of the Clash called the Ramones "..the daddy punk group of all time," in a recent interview with Spin magazine.
