It may not be 24 hours of Showtime in HDTV on DIRCTV but for the content starved HDTV early adopters this is great news – NBC and HDNet will be broadcasting all of the Visa Triple Crown horse racing events this year. The coverage begins with the Kentucky Derby on Saturday, May 4 at 5 p.m. ET. The HDTV broadcasts will be available on NBC’s HDTV affiliate stations and on HDNet’s channel 199 on DIRECTV. The announcement was made today by Ken Schanzer, President, NBC Sports and Mark Cuban, co-founder and president of HDNet.

Both new audio formats, DVD-Audio and SCAD, are randy for consumer momentum and significant record company support after basically missing the all important Christmas season in 2001. A clear-cut format war between the Sony-Philips team vs. Matsushita, AOL Time-Warner and others isn’t helping clear things up either.

Lisa ``Left Eye'' Lopes, the thirty year old singer from the Grammy-winning trio TLC was killed in a car crash in Honduras on April 24, 2002. There is no word yet if Lopes, who often vacationed in Honduras and frequently assisted at a child development center there, was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. Arista records President, L.A. Reid, offered his condolences to the family, friends and fans of the young star who would have turned thirty one in May.
