Nine leading companies today announced that they have jointly established the basic specifications for a next generation large capacity optical disc video recording format called "Blu-ray Disc". The Blu-ray Disc enables the recording, rewriting and playback of up to 27 gigabytes (GB) of data on a single sided single layer 12cm CD/DVD size disc using a 405nm blue-violet laser. The companies that established the basic specifications for the Blu-ray Disc are: Hitachi Ltd., LG Electronics Inc., Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd., Pioneer Corporation, Royal Philips Electronics, Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd., Sharp Corporation, Sony Corporation, and Thomson Multimedia.

The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) announced yesterday that the number of units shipped domestically from record companies to retail outlets and special markets (music clubs and mail order) fell 10.3 percent in 2001. Specifically, total U.S. shipments dropped from 1.08 billion units shipped in 2000 to 968.58 million in 2001—a 10.3 percent decrease. The dollar value of all music product shipments decreased from $14.3 billion in 2000 to $13.7 billion in 2001—a 4.1 percent decrease, according to figures released today by the RIAA.

2001 was one of the toughest years for recorded music ever with sales down over 10 percent representing an industry wide loss that was the worst in 20 years. Unfortunately, the Grammy’s represented much of what was wrong with popular music. Despite boom times for feature films and DVD-video sales, music slumped with a proliferation of boy bands and prepackaged pop garbage (and I don’t mean Shirley Manson).

Nakamichi Japan Files For Bankruptcy Citing the ten year economic downturn domestically in Japan, Nakamichi Japan announced on February 19, 2002 that they are filing with the Japanese government for their version of Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. The parent company that owns Nak, Grande Group, is pledging to sponsor the reorganization and restructuring. Grande is a diversified company owning interests in consumer electronics, gaming and hotels.

Silverline Records has entered into a long-term licensing deal with Sanctuary Records to release DVD-Audio titles, it was announced today by John Trickett, Chairman of the 5.1 Entertainment Group and Merck Mercuriadis, CEO of The Sanctuary Group Inc., the US arm of London based international media company The Sanctuary Group plc.
