It is that time of year again. It is the time for a new season of NHL Hockey. Just think about it…. the blood, the guts, the scoring action, the playoff race – I can’t stand the anticipation. This year the ante has been upped by broadcasting pioneer and Dallas Mavericks owner, Mark Cuban. For the 2001-02 season 65 NHL games will be broadcast in high quality HDTV on HDNet, channel 199 on DirecTV. Tonight’s game featuring the Los Angeles Kings versus the Phoenix Coyotes (10:30 EST) is the first of the broadcasts.

Panasonic introduced their new PT-50PD3 HDTV plasma TV today which boasts the claim of having the highest contrast of any plasma to date at 3000:1. Contrast is a key issue in flat panel designs with one of the biggest knocks on the super-slender monitors being their lack of black levels as compared to traditional CRT TVs. The PT-50PD3 is HDTV capable for both 720p and 1080I sources and is priced at $15,995.

Universal Music Group, the largest record company in the world, has just announced they plan to begin issuing CDs in October that contain special software to prevent them from being digitally copied or "ripped" into computer files. This means that you’ll no longer be able to make personal backup copies if you own these discs, or create MP3 files to store on your computer. A huge promotional push has been put on by Apple to encourage people to put "rip, mix and burn" music on your computer but it seems the record companies world prefer that you only do so with your own original material and not their copywritten discs.

ALONG CAME A SPIDER (Paramount Home Entertainment), released theatrically earlier this year, is a tale of a deceptive kidnapping, with at least one expert plot twist.
