Meridian Audio, Ltd., has announced important upgrades to Version 3 of the 800 Player and 861 Reference Surround Controller. A major enhancement is the addition of MHR Smart Link, a digital multichannel connection which directly couples the 800 Player to the 861 Reference Surround Controller and to Meridian’s family of DSP loudspeakers. The MHR Smart Link uses proprietary encryption and signaling technology and is the first system to be officially sanctioned for DVD-Audio content protection. For the first time, the full resolution of multichannel audio from DVD-Audio recordings (as well as those from CD and DVD-Video) can be losslessly transferred in the digital domain from player, to surround controller, to loudspeaker.

Pop superstar Mariah Carey is being dumped. Not by a new boyfriend or Tommy Motolla (president of Sony Music) again, but by her record label, Virgin Records. After signing the largest recording contract ever ($80 million for four albums) the disappointing performance of the soundtrack to her film Glitter started industry insiders speculating about Carey being dropped from the EMI owned record label. Virgin is reportedly paying Carey $28 million to end her recording contract early.

HDNet and NBC will broadcast live high definition (HDTV) coverage of NBA on NBC when the Dallas Mavericks host the Los Angeles Lakers on Sunday, Feb. 3rd at 2:30 p.m. ET at the American Airlines Center. HDTV viewers can watch the game broadcast on NBC's digital television affiliates and on HDNet's channel 199 on DIRECTV. HDNet was founded by Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban, HDNet (www.hd.net) is the world's only all high definition national television network.The widescreen format and superior clarity of HDTV will give NBA fans a viewing experience that is close to being there in person. With a view of the full court, fans can follow every move of their favorite players and watch the developing plays at the same time.
