Sales of Digital Televisions Up In A Down Economy Factory-to-dealer sales of digital television (DTV) monitors and television (monitors with integrated tuners) totaled 227,349 units in the second quarter and topped $406 million according to figures released today by the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). June sales, in particular, exceeded the 90,000 unit mark. The jump in June figures represents the third consecutive month of sales growth in 2001 and an 82 percent increase from June 2000 sales. Sales of DTV sets and monitors in June totaled 90,973 units, or dollar sales of more than $159 million, in a month when the average unit selling price had dropped by almost $200.

The recently-introduced Macrovision ‘SafeAudio’ system for copy-protecting CDs may have already been broken, according to at least one European cracker site. The new system, which is intended to prevent the copying, or "ripping" of Audio CDs on a computer, allegedly does not affect audio playback on regular CD players, or even on the CD drives of PCs.

ALL THAT HEAVEN ALLOWS (Home Vision/Criterion) is director Douglas Sirk’s 1955 melodrama starring Jane Wyman and Rock Hudson. Aspect ratio is 1.85:1; sound format is English Dolby Digital 2.0 Mono, with English subtitles. Extras include a BBC documentary on Sirk, Rainer Werner Fassbinder’s illustrated essay on Sirk and a stills archive. The film predates MPAA ratings. THE CAVEMAN’S VALENTINE (Universal Studios Home Video), released theatrically earlier this year, is director Kasi Lemmons slightly hallucinogenic mystery about a homeless man (Samuel L. Jackson) investigating a murder. Colm Feore also stars. Aspect ratio is widescreen; sound format is English DTS and English Dolby Digital 5.1, with English subtitles. MPAA rating is R (language, sexuality, some violence).
