THE AFFAIR OF THE NECKLACE (Warner Home Video) is a 2001 drama, based on a real incident, in which a French noblewoman (Hilary Swank) trying to reclaim her title attempted to pull off a complicated swindle involving Marie Antoinette (Joely Richardson) and a highly-placed cardinal (Jonathan Pryce). Simon Baker and Adrien Brody also star; Charles Shyer directs. Aspect ratio is 2.35:1; sound format is English 5.1,with English, French and Spanish subtitles. Extras include audio commentary by director Shyer, two making-of featurettes, additional scenes, an outtake reel, cast and crew highlights and the theatrical trailer. MPAA rating is R.

Adding another notch to the bedpost of her illustrious career, Madonna can cross “Be a Bond Girl” off her list of to-do’s. In the upcoming film, Die Another Day, the 20th James Bond film, Madonna will pay the roll of Maddy, a sword weilding fencing instructor. Although it will only be a small cameo in the film, Madonna, like Paul McCartney and Duran Duran before her, has lent her musical talents to Die Another Day by recording the film’s theme song. She will also be traveling to Los Angeles next month to film the music video for the song.

Senator Joe Biden has proposed legislation to Congress designed to attack the sudden increase in use of the drug Ecstasy by U.S. teens. Biden notes that according to The Partnership for a Drug Free America, there has been a 71 percent increase in use of Ecstasy since 1999. Biden’s target is not a new one, he is calling for increased Federal powers to bust raves (techno dance parties) and concert promoters under aggressive crack house statues that have monetary penalties as high as $500,000 coupled with as many as 20 years imprisonment.

Once crowned the King of Pop, Michael Jackson has now teamed up with the controversial Reverend Al Sharpton to protest the treatment of black artists by the music industry especially Jackson’s label, Sony Music.

Ray Brown, the bassist that helped define the 1940’s bebop sound, died in his hotel room in Indianapolis yesterday. He was on a tour stop to play a gig at the Jazz Bakery. Brown had played with artists ranging from Dizzy Gillespie to Charlie Parker. He was, also at one time, married to Ella Fitzgerald.
