Escient recently announced that it has teamed with Get Digital, a provider of CD ripping and high quality data tagging services, to provide retailers who sell Escient FireBall music management systems with a quick and efficient way to upload their clients’ CD collections into a FireBall system’s music library. The new QuickFire Music Loading Service combines CD ripping, encoding and FireBall loading with album and artist information provided by Get Digital’s DataFix process. The service also provides users with extras such as a three-ring bound color catalog of their CD collection and MP3 library backup on DVD-R’s.

You can’t go to far these days without seeing Apple Computer ads on television promoting their latest buzzword: “Shuffle.” Beyond it being Apple’s latest $99 iPod, the idea of Shuffle is more of a cultural phenomenon than a piece of hardware. The genie is long out of the bottle with downloadable music. The music industry, these days being comprised more of order takers than visionaries, have embraced the download model as their future, despite the fact that it takes their musical commodity and insults it with low profitability and even lower-quality sound.

Apple has unveiled a 6GB iPod mini and two iPod photo models with high-resolution color screens. The new iPod mini line-up includes the 4GB model for $199 (down from $249) and a 6GB model with 50 percent more storage priced at $249. Both iPod mini models feature increased battery life of up to 18 hours, USB charging and a portable lightweight design available in four colors.
