KLOS radio in Los Angeles reported Saturday that the Genesis progressive rock classic, The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway has been mixed for 5.1 audio and will be released this September. The concept album features a young Peter Gabriel on vocals and Phil Collins on drums. Many art rock fans consider this to be one of the top ten best progressive rock albums in music history. Atlantic Records being part of Warner will likely release the disc on DVD. The question is will the release be on DVD-Audio or some form of Dual Disc. Sources inside a major record label and a prominent electronics manufacturer tell AudioRevolution.com that the Dual Disc test marketing went very well with very few returns. The 2000th Super Audio CD (SACD) title has now been released – a major breakthrough in the acceptance of this music format. Jamie Cullum’s highly acclaimed album “Twentysomething” has just been made available on SACD joining a host of international artists to embrace the new musical format as it comes of age. Additional artists like Diana Krall and Beyoncé are also planning to release their albums on SACD. The catalog of CD discs now encompasses all genres of music including pop, jazz, classical and rap.

Jazz reissuer, Fantasy Jazz records, is going to be releasing five new stereo hybrid SACD titles on April 26, 2004. The new SACD titles include: • Thelonious Monk, Brilliant Corners (Riverside) • Big Star, #1 Record/Radio City (Stax) • Albert King, I'll Play the Blues for You (Stax) • Amadeus soundtrack (Fantasy, 2-CD set) • Oscar Peterson + Stephane Grappelli + Joe Pass + Mickey Roker + NielsPedersen, Skol (Pablo) Fantasy Jazz records can be found in mainstream record stores as well as with online retailers like Amazon.com. Hybrid SACDs play on hundreds of millions of CD players at 16 bit resolution. On the same discs audiophiles will find a higher resolution stereo version of the disc that can only be played on an SACD player.

We have just received a list of DVD-Audio discs from various major and smaller labels that are slated to be released in the coming months of 2004. As we all know nothing is guaranteed in terms of release dates for the list. AudioRevolution.com reviewer Ben Shyman is still drooling, waiting for the day Yes’ Close To The Edge album is finally released on DVD-Audio. No information was available as to any or all of these titles being released as “Dual Discs.” If you are not familiar with dual Discs they are a new type of two sided disc that have a DVD (can be DVD-Audio) on one layer and a CD layer on the other. All of the major labels are in the midst of a test marketing exercise with Dual Discs in Boston and Seattle.
