In the era of Napster, MP3 and downloadable music, music sales were up a total of 4% from the year 1999. For the 2000 holiday season (Thanksgiving through New Year’s Eve) music sales were up 2.4% from 1999. These statistics do not seem to support the theory that free music file swapping hurts the sales of albums. Move over Backstreet Boys, the Beatles regain the top position on the charts. With a four week sales total over 2.5 million, the Beatles’ new 27 song career retrospective 1 (Capitol Records) bumped the Backstreet Boys out of the #1 sales throne this week. Selling nearly 671,000 copies from December 4th to December 10th, the Beatles bested The Backstreet Boys by more than 60,000 units. Despite mixed reviews, the power of the Beatles name, coupled with a large-scale network television promotion has holiday shoppers flocking to record stores to pick up the new album.
