Radio stations, reportedly in 3 major groups, have voluntarily removed potentially offensive songs from their playlists at stations nationwide. Initially thought to be an act of sensitivity to the victims of September 11th’s and a nation currently in mourning, continuing to censor songs more than over a week after the tragedies seems more like an attack on our freedom of speech much like the terrorists would have wished for. A list of songs allegedly censored by Clear Channel Communications, owner of over 1200 US radio properties, includes: "Stairway To Heaven," "Sunday Bloody Sunday" "Another One Bites The Dust" and "Rocket Man." More obscure songs have been supposedly dropped from US rotations at other radio groups like Citadel and Bonneville including The Beatles’ "A Day In The Life" and "It’s The End Of The World As We Know It" by R.E.M.

The pilot of the chartered Cessna twin engine plane than crashed with 22 year old R&B star Aaliyah on board, had plead no contest to cocaine possession just 12 days before the ill-fated flight. The FAA spokesperson Kathleen Bergen, says the pilot, Luis Antonio Morales Blanes, had not been approved by the FAA to fly for the charter company, Blackhawk International Airlines. In Los Angeles, fans of Aaliyah have erected an impromptu memorial for the singer on her promotional billboard on the side of Tower Records on Sunset Boulevard. Mourners have written their last respects right on the giant poster while also leaving flowers and lighting candles in memory of Aaliyah. Sources: MSNBC.com

The ACLU's Drug Policy Litigation Project scored a victory in New Orleans late yesterday when U.S. District Judge G. Thomas Porteous ruled that prosecutors cannot force the organizers of a rave dance party Friday night to ban pacifiers, or glow sticks as "drug paraphernalia". The judge's ruling blocks part of a plea bargain between prosecutors and a company that puts on raves at the State Palace Theater. According to the ACLU complaint, the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) has banned symbols of rave culture such as masks, glow items, pacifiers, and vapor rub from a prominent dance venue, saying that these items constitute "drug paraphernalia."
