Toshiba Will Launch a 55 Inch Glasses-Free 3DTV in December
Some technologies propagate a bit faster than others.   We're still waiting for large scale OLED sets at a reasonable price - and we'll probably just keep on waiting - but glasses-free TV is already here.  Or it will be in December anyway. Toshiba's upcoming 55 inch set will allow you to enjoy the 3D experience without having to wear glasses, which is a feat that may really turn some heads.  After all, 3D glasses are one of the most of maligned parts of the 3D experience.

Pioneer Elite TVs are Back!
Folks that appreciate a good TV - a really good TV - hold Pioneer in incredibly high regard. The Kuro series of plasmas is still the one that sets the standard for deep black levels and Pioneer's reputation is still strong years after the company exited the TV market. Those Pioneer Elite sets are coming back with help from Sharp.  We're not getting a plasma, which may disappoint some fans, but the LED backlit LCD that's being offered sounds impressive.  It packs the same yellow sub-pixel that Sharp is known for, as well as full LED backlighting and local dimming of those LEDs.

Hitachi Considers Exit from TV Business
Sure, Hitachi isn't exactly a TV brand that AV Rev readers are likely to have in the house - it's not on the same level as a Panasonic, Samsung or Sony - but when any brand is considering leaving the business it's well worth a mention. Hitachi started in TV production back in 1956 and now, 55 years later, they're finding things a bit difficult.  Competing with Korean manufacturers who have lower costs is problematic and Hitachi has been considering outsourcing production for some time.

LG Announces
LG isn't messing around with the new LW9800 series of televisions, nor are they humble.  Company president Havis Kwon calls the 9800 the crown jewel of TVs and claims that LG has set a new benchmark in connectivity and picture quality. The LW9800 uses passive 3D technology that ensures that the glasses are lightweight and inexpensive.  It also boasts a proprietary 2D to 3D conversion technology so if you run out of 3D content to watch you can switch regularly 2D content over to the third dimension.

Westinghouse Debuts First 3DTV
Budget display manufacturer, Westinghouse, jumped into the 3D pool at CE Week in New York City, with the announcement of its first 3DTV, the 47-inch W47S2TCD.  Unlike most 3D displays on the market, Westinghouse has decided to go with passive glasses display technology, rather than active.  Passive glasses 3DTVs don't offer full 1080p/per eye stereo 3D available with active technology, but both the passive (polarized) glasses and the televisions themselves tend to be more affordable.
