Rumors reported by the Los Angeles Times and Reuters say that DirecTV, under the control of News Corp, is planning to end its four year relationship with TiVo. The rumor sent TiVo’s stock down 16 percent today. TiVo spokespeople have told reporters that they intend to continue to do business with DirecTV and for good reason. Reportedly over half of TiVo’s 800,000 subscribers come from DirecTV. What might Rupert Murdoch and News Corp have up their sleeves? Possibly a deal with Microsoft who unsuccessfully launched a personal video recorder system named Ultimate TV. ReplayTV also has a competing service both of which could be had by DirecTV in a way that could lower costs and or improve earnings. DTS (Digital Theater Systems, Inc.) announces the availability of the first standard OEM car audio system to feature DTS 5.1-channel Digital Surround in the United States in the 2004 Acura TL. The 2004 Acura TL’s ELS Premium Eight-Speaker Surround Sound System with DVD-Audio, DTS and Six-Disc CD Changer, AM/FM Tuner and Dolby Cassette was designed with recording engineer and producer Elliot Scheiner. Producing six channels of sound, the system plays DTS 5.1 Music Discs as well as DVD-Audio titles. The first OEM standard vehicle to carry a DTS-capable system was the Toyota Brevis, available in Japan, and DTS-capable systems are currently available as an optional feature in the Lexus RX330 and Lexus GX430. Additionally, most major after-market car audio manufacturers currently produce systems featuring DTS decoders, including Alpine, Clarion, Eclipse, JVC, Kenwood, Panasonic, Pioneer, Sanyo and Sony. The result of the review are: 1. TMA will remain in its purpose-built facility in Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire. 2. TMA will continue to manufacture its product range. 3. TMA will focus on home cinema products. 4. TMA will maintain ongoing Research and Development. 5. TMA will provide after sales support, including Helpdesk, Service & Maintenance. 6. TMA will be resized to match its home cinema product range. This is good news for existing clients, dealers and prospective clients. With the goal of making AV gear with the speed of a F1 car and the precision of a fine timepiece, Tag McLaren is one of the most exciting new AV companies to come along in a while.

Manufacturer-to-dealer sales of digital television (DTV) products reached new heights during the second quarter of 2003 with year-to-date unit sales totaling 1,438,713 and dollar revenues of more than $2.1 billion, according to figures released today by the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). The 2003 second quarter sales surpassed the 2002 second quarter total by 69 percent in units and 43 percent in dollars. During June, factory-to-dealer sales of DTV products totaled 365,210 units with dollar revenues of some $524.1 million. These figures represent an increase of 110 percent and 81 percent, respectively, compared to June 2002. CEA defines DTV products as integrated sets and monitors displaying active vertical scanning lines of at least 480p and, in the case of integrated sets, receiving and decoding ATSC terrestrial digital broadcasts.
