Coming to Theaters April 30 2010
If you live in a big city or a college town, you're in luck.  There's something in the theaters worth seeing.  If not, it might be best to just stay home.  At the time of this writing, both major releases this week are tied at a 0% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.  Say what you want about the accuracy of aggregators, that can't be a good sign.

Audio Production and Critical Listening: Technical Ear Training (Book Review)
Ear training is one of the most important aspects that is lacking in today's recording programs.  Only a handful actually take the time to train the ear in addition to teaching the technical aspects.  When I heard that this book was coming my way I was excited at the prospect of a book that attempts to ear train.  Just like a musician must (should) train his or her ear to each note and whether it is flat or sharp, etc., a recording engineer should be able to detect signal processing, space and time. Unfortunately, this is not the case usually.  Jason Corey's "Audio Production and Critical Listening" is an attempt to rectify this oversight.  It is my sad duty to report that is fails on must accounts. The majority of the book (which is not that long) simply talks about signal processing ...

Coming to Theaters April 16th 2010
Two movies come out this week, but really, there’s only one that’s worth seeing.  It’s based on a comic book by Mark Millar, who also wrote Wanted, and it stars Nicholas Cage and Christopher Mintz-Plasse.  No, it’s not ‘Death at a Funeral'.

The Guide to MIDI Orchestration [4th Edition] (Book Review)
MIDI orchestration is an integral part of today's film scoring.  It is cost effective and allows for more trial and error.  MIDI has been around for quite some time, and as this book proves, it is getting stronger in film scoring. "The Guide to MIDI Orchestration" is now in its fourth edition.  It originally debuted in 1997.  While I have now strict basis for comparison from the previous edition of the book, considering the last edition was released in 2004, this edition is a welcome update.  Several new and updated technologies have been released in the past several years.  This book attempts to briefly cover some of them. However, this book is structured for a music orchestration course and not a technology course.  The first two thirds of the book deals solely with the structure of an orchestra.  The author nicely separates ...
