A maker of DVD-copying software is offering $10,000 bounties for tips about people who are using the product to pirate movies but the company says the move is not directly related to its legal fight with Hollywood. In the first week after offering the rewards, 321 Studios did not field any tips of suspected piracy and does not expect that to change, said Robert Moore, 321's founder and president. "It's primarily our response to the Motion Picture Association of America's continued claims that this software is a piracy tool, that I'm a thief and that every one of my customers is a co-conspirator," Moore said. "Those are their words, not mine, and I'm frankly tired of hearing it."

The incredible success of DVD video has propelled home video to become America’s most popular entertainment medium, surpassing consumer spending on movie tickets, music, video games and mass-market books. Just announced by the DVD Entertainment Group at the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, U.S. consumers spent more than twice as much buying and renting DVDs and VHS as they did going to the movies. In 2002, consumers spent $20.3 billion buying and renting DVDs and VHS versus $9.3 billion moviegoers spent at the theatrical box office.

Exploiting a loophole in the DVD Consortium agreement, a handful of mostly high-end A/V manufactures are showing and/or selling prototypes of DVD players with configuration that allow a straight digital connection between a DVD player and a digital video source such as a plasma screen, a DLP or a D-ILA projector. In order to make an official DVD player, you have to pay a license that sets the rules of how you can configure the player's software. A digital video out is a violation of these rules that can cause the seller to face a penalty reportedly as high as $100,000 per unit sold.
