Netflix CEO Says DVD Has Two Years Left on Top
It’s easy to ignore predictions set forth by the press, analysts, and even those in the business.  Of course, it’d be a shame to ignore someone that just might have some insight.  Take Reed Hastings, the CEO of Netflix.  He heads an incredibly successful company that seems to have jumped into streaming technology at just the right time.

Toshiba Producing More Standard Definition Hardware
Toshiba has promised us a Blu-ray player, but it looks like they are still rolling out standard definition products.  Their latest release includes three models of a DVR/DVD player/recorder.  Each model is roughly the same, changing the storage capacity and DAC.

Sony Announces a Compact DVD Recorder
The latest DVDirect Recorder from Sony is 60% smaller than previous models.  It is able to transfer videos (high- and standard-def) from a camcorder or camera to a DVD without a computer.  The files are transferred at up to 1080i resolution and 5.1 channel sound, and are playable on Blu-Ray players and PS3s.

Real Counters Movie Studios
The RealNetworks legal battle against top Hollywood studios is going to expand.  The lawsuit revolves around DVD-ripping software that Real introduced several years ago, RealDVD, and the studios’ complaint that it allowed consumers to rent, rip and return DVDs without paying full price for them.

DVD Still Dominant Over Blu-ray and Downloads
The “Entertainment Trends in America” report update from NPD Group this March shows that 63% of consumer entertainment media spending is still going towards DVDs, beating Blu-Ray spending and downloads by a wide margin.
