Panasonic announced today the introduction of the DMP-BD30, the next generation High Definition 1080p Blu-ray Disc player. The DMP-BD30 is the first Blu-ray player to be introduced with Final Standard Profile, which adds a variety of new and enhanced features to the Blu-ray arena and one that separates the Panasonic Blu-ray player from the rest of the field. Also unique to the DMP-BD30 is the inclusion of an SD Memory Card slot for playback of High Definition content recorded in the AVCHD format. The SD slot also allows for viewing of digital still images recorded to an SD Memory Card.

Spider-man 3 on Blu-ray is one of the Holiday season’s most highly anticipated releases on the 1080p high definition Blu-ray format but early adopters may have problems playing the disc in many of today’s Blu-ray players. Using a review copy of "Spider-man 3" on Blu-ray on local tests at, the disc struggled to play in the brand new Samsung BD-P1400. After an excruciatingly long load-up time, the disc starts to freeze and skip from the very start. Audio dropping out, picture stuttering, you name it. Compared to the mainstream consumer’s expectation for DVD playback, most couldn’t make it to the actual film.

LG Electronics, the first company to introduce a dual-format high-definition disc player, unveiled its second-generation LG Super Blu™ Player (model BH200). Sporting both formats’ logos, LG’s new high-def player is capable of Blu-ray disc and HD DVD playback with advanced BD-Java and HDi interactivity, enabling consumers to choose from the widest variety of high-def content regardless of disc format.

This coming holiday season consumers will see a host of “next generation” high-definition players hitting the market – in both the HD DVD and Blu-ray format. For the Blu-ray camp, Denon has recently announced their intention to release the first high-end Blu-ray player. The Denon DVD-3800BDCI is scheduled for release this fall carrying a price tag of $1,999. This will also be the first Blu-ray player to feature the powerful Silicon Optix’s 10-bit Realta HQV video processor, as seen in the Toshiba HD-XA2 HD DVD player. The player will also feature HDMI v1.3 output allowing for enough bandwidth to pass the new high-resolution audio formats from DTS and Dolby to an HDMI 1.3 equipped receiver for decoding.

Target has announced a partnership with Sony to begin selling the entry-level Sony BDP-S300 Blu-ray disc player in stores this Fall and holiday season. The player, along with Blu-ray titles will be featured on aisle endcaps in Target stores nationwide. The player will be available for $499, along with Blu-ray titles from three Hollywood studios including Sony, Disney, and another studio to be announced later.
