Next Gen, HDMI 1.3 Receivers Slow To Market � Do You Really Need Them?
With a few exceptions, the latest generation of AV receivers, complete with HDMI 1.3 switching, have been slow to reach the market. First to store shelves were the Onkyo and Integra products (both receivers and AV preamps) who bucked the traditional chip makers and went with a configuration of three Texas Instruments audio DSP engines for the needed processing. While there are reported problems with lip sync issues by some users, this has been the one and only HDMI 1.3 solution on the market for some time now. A number of AVRev.com’s editorial staff have upgraded from far more expensive AV preamps to the Integra for its switching power for systems running multiple HD sources.

Onkyo Introduces Powerful Entry-Level AV Receivers
Onkyo has introduced two affordably-priced A/V receivers that deliver a remarkable array of high end features for home theater and multichannel music reproduction. The 80 watt-per-channel TX-SR576 and 75 watt-per-channel TX-SR506 are the lowest priced receivers ever to include the company's Powered Zone 2 capability and front channel bi-amplification features, and are among the first receivers available anywhere to include Audyssey's new Dynamic EQ loudness correction technology. These receivers each include three HDMI inputs, Audyssey 2EQ automatic room correction, and also mark the company's first implementation of its new Music Optimizer software, which improves fidelity for MP3 and AAC encoded digital music sources.

Yamaha unveiled a new line of digital home theater receivers that further extend high end functionality, flexibility and intuitive operation at moderate price points. Integrated among the line of five models (RX-V863, 105Wx7, MSRP $999.95; RX-V663, 95Wx7, MRSP $549.95; RX-V563, 90Wx7, MSRP $449.95; RX-V463, 105Wx5, MSRP $349.95; and RX-V363, 100Wx5, MSRP $229.95) are features such as 1080p-compatible HDMI switching, wireless Bluetooth audio playback and iPod-compatibility (with optional accessories), XM and Sirius Satellite Radio compatibility, four system-configuring SCENE modes and improved CINEMA DSP Technology. At the top of the new line, the RX-V863 and RX-V663 support the newest Blu-ray HD audio surround sound formats, such as the “lossy” Dolby Digital Plus and DTS-HD High Resolution Audio formats and “lossless” Dolby True HD and DTS-HD Master Audio formats. Sherwood America Inc. introduces the flagship receiver in their high-performance Newcastle line-up. Rated at 100 watts RMS per channel for each of its 7 powered channels, the Sherwood R-972 fully supports HDMI 1.3b standard, scales all video to 1080p via the Silicon Optix Reon processor, decodes lossless audio via dual TI 32- bit DSP chips, uses a Dual ModeTM RF plus IR remote control and marks the consumer debut of the Trinnov Optimizer Digital Room Correction system in a consumer device.
