Revel Ultima Series Studio Loudspeaker Revel’s Ultima Series has been wowing CES attendees for a couple of years with the Salon loudspeaker. This year they have added the Studio to this no compromise, price- is -no-object lineup. It is similar in design with the distinctive cabinet design and high gloss finish, however it only houses two 8" woofers instead of three. The exposed portion contains a 5" titanium mid-range driver and a 1.1" alloy dome tweeter. This loudspeaker delivers exceptional bass response (-10dB @22Hz) , better than many subwoofers. Price: $10,000 a pair Availability: April 1999 Snell Acoustics XA Series Snell effectively demonstrated a new series of high performance loudspeakers. There are two floor-standing models, a center channel, dipole speaker and subwoofer. The larger XA-90PS is $7000 a pair and employ an active subwoofer. The 300 watt amp drives dual 10" woofers. The XA-75PS is conceptually the same as the XA-90PS except it only employs a single woofer, driven by a 200 watt amp. The XA-70PS retails for $4200 a pair. The XA-55CR center channel is tonally matched to both the XA90 and XA75. The treble level switch matches the speaker to room acoustics. At the flip of a switch the SR30MP delivers a diffuse or direct radiating pattern dependant on the desired effect. The center speaker is $1300 and the rear speakers are $1500 a piece. Hales Design Cinema Series The Cinema Series is difficult to describe as it doesn’t come in conventional cabinets as we know, as they are designed to sit behind walls and screens just like a movie theater. The loudspeaker is horn-loaded with 15" drivers. It’s important to note they are strictly for large, custom designed home theaters. What I noticed is how much this system duplicated the large spacious theatrical feel than most other systems, which tend to have a very near-field effect. Each channel is going to run $ 7,500. At a later time there will be a choice of alternative rear channel speakers for $2,500 a piece and subwoofer. Price: $1000 each Availability: March 1999 Definitive Technology BP 3000TL Synopsis of Product / Unique Features: This is a full range bipolar loudspeaker system incorporating a 1000 watt powered subwoofer. The front and rear arrays are housed in different sized chambers combined with separately configured front and rear crossovers. It is bi-wireable, and also tri-wireable with a low level input for the woofer and a LFE input. Price: $2250 each
