Spring will lead in a plethora of low-cost 5.1 channel A/V receivers. Prices continue to plummet in this category, with several models actually coming in below the magical $500 benchmark, which really tells the story about mainstream acceptance of the home theater concept.

Technics SA-DX940 A/V Receiver

Pioneer A/V Receivers (VSX-D509S, VSX-D409, VSX-D309 and VSX-D209.

Yamaha A/V Receivers (RX-V496 and RX-V396)

  • using an exclusive new Yamaha IC, Dolby Digital and DTS decoding are available on a single chip in the RX-V496, as are 14 other surround effects; the RX-V396 only has Dolby Digital
  • RX-V496 delivers 70 watts to each of the five channels, while the RX-V396 is rated at 60 watts x 5

Sony DAV-S300 Integrated System
