High Performance DVD and Changers
Now that all DVD players are compatible with existing digital surround formats and offer high-bit DACs, whats next? How about multi-disc changers or built-in amplifiers?
The SD4109X six-disc changer from Toshiba includes HDCD processing and a unique picture zoom feature, enabling the magnification of 25 sectors in the picture. An exclusive Video Level Expansion circuit provides improved contrast and extended gray scale reproduction for deeper and richer blacks. The unit will sell for $599.95. Also, incorporating HDCD processing, the SD5109 at $999 allows users to load two DVD discs simultaneously and play them in succession for uninterrupted viewing of multi-disc DVD titles. Confused about DVD and processor combinations? Toshiba removes the guesswork with the budget-conscious $599 SD6109C, the one and only combination DVD player and A/V receiver. With only 50 watts per channel, the receiver is best suited for smaller listening environments where extreme volumes are not required (or desired). A Dolby Digital/DTS decoder is provided, along with Toshibas exclusive ColorStream component video outputs.
Denon delivers a five-disc changer, DVM-3700, with HDCD processing for $999 and the single-play DVD player, DVD-1500, in November for $499. Onkyo has the DV-C600 for $579.95, which allows users to change discs in five of the carousels slots while the sixth continues to play.
File this one under "most unusual": Panasonic unveiled the 27-inch PV-DM2799 Direct View monitor with a built-in DVD player, VCR and alarm clock. Outputs are provided for connection to a sound system with Dolby Digital and DTS decoding, though a virtual surround sound circuit is incorporated within the TV itself. Whos the market for such a device? It would have an obvious charm to the apartment dweller, but I think its also perfect for the weekend camper, who always brings the amenities of home in an oversized RV, as he parks by the lake to get away from it all.
