Digital Processors
Dolby Digital and DTS decoding are standard among all digital processors, along with high-quality 24-bit/96kHz DACs. Anything less is ancient 20th century technology. The major difference among the various models shown appeared to be the number of inputs and outputs offered and the types of connectors provided.
ADA follows up on the success of the popular Cinema Reference with the scaled-down Cinema Rhapsody ($3,800). It still provides THX Ultra enhancements, several Dolby Digital and DTS modes, and ensures the same sound reproduction qualities which I thought were extraordinary (see Archives for my review for the Cinema Reference). Cutting corners consisted of removing the RF and component video input (a far more serious loss). There are links to ADAs 6.1 surround sound adapter for next generation DVDs incorporating Surround EX soundtracks. Like Big Brother, the Cinema Rhapsody employs an auto-detection circuit to engage the correct decoding mode.
Anthem by Sonic Frontiers showed off the AVM-1 digital processor that will complement their highly acclaimed line of amplifiers. It will be available in winter 2000 for $2,499. The AVM-1 had an ample supply of inputs and outputs in various connector types, including balanced outputs for all six channels, seven video inputs with composite and S-video, and two component inputs. All seven audio inputs provide analog and SPDIF digital connectors, with one Toslink connection and one pro audio AES/EBU-type connector. A bi-directional RS-232 communication link ensures an easy and convenient software upgrade path and allows the use of home automation controllers.
Parasound eliminated the component video switching (and component inputs) and THX Ultra specification in favor of the Lucasfilm® Cinema Re-EQ circuit to deliver the economical AVC-1800 ($1,195) preamp/processor as an alternative to the more costly AVC-2500. The sheer number of inputs also seems reduced, with only four A/V inputs and three audio-only inputs. Surround modes and digital inputs are assignable to sources, allowing a user to program the proper input and type of surround preferred for each source. This processor also incorporates a tuner with 29 presets. A 12-volt DC trigger allows for the automation of lights, drapes and screen drops. The unit should start shipping in time for Christmas.
